In 1964, the Canadian government wanted to adopt a distinctive national flag. Hundreds of Canadians submitted their designs. The Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, wanted a flag with three red maple leaves between two blue borders, but he was overruled. In early 1965, the single-leaf red-and-white design was officially inaugurated.
